On July 30, Dr. Boleslaw Szymanski was a panelist at ICCCN 2018 panel on Research Challenges on Networks in Social Spaces

On July 30, Center Director, Dr. Boleslaw Szymanski was a member of the panel moderated by Professor Mani Srivatsa of UCLA at the 27th International Conference on Computer Communications and Networks (ICCCN 2018) in Hangzhou,China. The panel focused on Research Challenges on Networks in Social Spaces. The panel discuss opportunities and challenges that arise from the ubiquity of mobile devices and sensors in personal and public spaces. Integration of these devices (and their owners) into social networks with powerful information sharing capabilities creates unprecedented macroscope into society. It also arises challenges such as user privacy, data ownership, application transparency, information provenance, truth discovery, and source accountability. In his position statement, Dr. Szymanski focused of what we can learn about the clustering of users of these devices from the way the information propagates through them. He also addressed the challenge of misinformation and “fake news” in this setting.
