Social Cognitive Networks Academic Research Center

The ARL Social Cognitive Network Academic Research Center (SCNARC) has been created and funded as a part of the US Army Network Science Collaborative Technology Alliance together with three other centers focusing on different kind of networks. The funding of SCNARC comes predominantly from the US Army and the Army Research Laboratory plays the key role in guiding the research directions of NS CTA. The principal member of the Center is Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute while the remaining members are CUNY, IBM TJ Watson Research Laboratory, and Northeastern University. The Center includes also collaborators from the Army Research Laboratory, Indiana University, University of Maryland, MIT, Northwestern University, University of Notre Dame and NYU. The Center will collaborate closely with other centers of the Network Science CTA.

SCNARC Director Invited as Speaker at the Workshop on Complex Networks

Feb. 28, 2013: Prof. Boleslaw Szymanski, the Director of the Social Cognitive Networks Academic Research Center at RPI, is an invited speaker at the 4th Workshop on Complex Networks in Berlin, Germany. Feb. 20, 2013: SCNARC members presented at the American Association for Advancement of Science (publisher of Science Magazine) Annual Meeting on the Beauty and Benefits of Science. One of the invited symposiums, titled: "Predictability: From Physical to Data Sciences" was organized by Prof. Albert-Laszlo Barabasi, and two of the six invited speakers are also member of SCNARC. Nov. 12, 2012: Dr. Jim Hendler, head of the Department of Computer Science and senior constellation professor in the Tetherless World Constellation at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, has been honored with an inaugural Strata Data Innovation Award 2012. Nov. 05, 2012: Paper by SCNARC graduate student Tommy Ngyuen and Center Director Boleslaw Szymanski titled "Using Location-Based Social Networks to Validate Human Mobility and Relationship Models" received the Best Paper Award at 2012 Workshop on Social Network Analysis and Applications at the International Conference on Advances in Social Networks Analysis in Istanbul, Turkey in August 2012. SCNARC/INARC Wins Best Paper Award at CIKM 2012

Nov. 05, 2012: Authors Hanghang Tong, B. Aditya Prakash, Tina Eliassi-Rad, Michalis Faloutsos, and Christos Faloutsos of the paper titled "Gelling, and Melting, Large Graphs by Edge Manipulation" received the Best Paper Award at the 2012 International Conference on Information and Knowledge Management (CIKM) in Maui, Hawaii in October 2012. Only one such award was given at the conference, and this paper was chosen out of 1099 submissions and 146 accepted as full papers. This is a cross-center close collaboration with SCNARC and INARC. Paper Selected as a Featured Article in IEEE TPDS

Oct. 26, 2012: SCNARC article "Exploiting Friendship Relations for Efficient Routing in Mobile Social Networks", authored by former SCNARC student Eyuphan Bulut and Center Director Boleslaw Szymanski, was selected as a featured article in the December issue of IEEE TPDS.  The article is available for free to all readers at the journal's webpage. Atricle can be found here. The paper is designated as what is equivalent to the best paper among the 16 papers in the issue.  The article explores the impact of social ties on routing. (more)

SCNARC Experts at Upcoming American Association of Advancement of Science Conference

Oct. 26, 2012: The American Association of Science, publisher of Science Magazine, organizes yearly conferences covering various topics in science. On February 16, 2013 at the next AAAS meeting, there will be a session titled "Predictibility:From Physical to Data Sciences" involving several SCNARC experts. Laszlo Barabasi from Northeastern University is the organizer of the session, and three NS-CTA speakers will be present including Alex Vespignani, Chaoming Song (completed PhD under NS-CTA support) and Bolek Szymanski.
